Echo

By the time Zeb got home it was early afternoon. Echo was curled up on the couch reading a book on the Apache history of Graham County. King, their new dog, was resting his head on her feet. A small fire glowed from the fireplace. She rose and greeted Zeb with a warm embrace and a soft kiss. Echo felt so soft, smelled so fresh and tasted like pure love. Zeb didn't want to let go. Echo couldn't help but notice his extra-long and tender embrace. She kept her arms around him, allowing him to eventually loosen the loving hug.

"Busy day, huh?"

"You might say there is a lot going on," replied Zeb. "My day just seems to be getting longer. I've got to run out to Song Bird's."

"Want me to ride along?"

"No, you look comfortable. It shouldn't take me long."

"Want something to eat before you go? I can heat up some leftovers in nothing flat."

Zeb was starving.

"Yes, I'd love that."

"Don't you even want to know what it is?"

"Nope," replied Zeb. "I trust you've made something delicious."

As Echo began to heat the leftovers, Zeb took a seat at the kitchen table. He pulled out his cellphone and clicked on the photos icon. He began to look at the few pictures he had taken of the body of the woman who tends sheep and goats, a picture of the dead sheep dog and the half dozen pictures of the glyphs.

"What are you looking at?" asked Echo.

"Death, death and a mystery."

"Now you've got my attention. Are they connected?"

"It feels to me like everything criminal that's going on around the county might be connected. But I sure as hell can't prove it. At least not yet."

Echo stirred the food cooking in the pan. After a moment she turned the heat to low and took a seat next to Zeb. Their hips and sides of their legs touched one another softly. Zeb bathed in her smells and soaked up the warmth of her body. The fatigue of the past 36 hours abruptly changed from tension to relaxation. The aroma of the cooking food drew interest from King who panted lightly as he rested his lower chin on Zeb's leg. Zeb rubbed King's head.

"Can I see what you're looking at?" asked Echo.

His first thought was of her PTSD and all the hard work she was doing to make it better. He was uncertain if the pictures of the dead woman and dead dog would have a deleterious effect on her. Thinking of her situation, he hesitated. If they were going to be together for the long term, this was just one of the many bad things she might encounter. He chose his words carefully. The decision would be hers whether to look at the pictures.

"First, let me tell you there are pictures of a dead woman and a dog that was killed with an arrow," said Zeb.

"Is the woman a friend of mine?"

"No." Zeb hesitated for a second. He didn't know everything. In fact, he hardly knew Echo's life history at all.
